Plus - Additionally the City has promised to bring in special dirt this fall to help slope the fields further and fill low spots for better drainage as well in addition to refinishing the infields as well as grass seed for the outfields. They also will connect the electric to the sprinkler system on Fenway which will help the newly installed sod.
9/6/06 - Field improvements don't happen overnight. The new field's surface has to be turned, scraped, surveyed and compacted to get water to drain off correctly. Jay Maiden from Maiden and Jenkins volunteered his time and equipment to survey and level the infield at of Three Rivers Stadium Saturday and Sunday. The hope is to provide better runoff or surface water and prepare the surface for final preparation for play next spring. He also helped dig out the dugouts for preparation of pouring the dugout's concrete pads. Thanks Jay!

The History of Sandlot. . . .the short version. . .
In 2004 Athens Sandlot started with a 9/10 year old baseball division (60 players) . . . and a goal of renovating the exisiting fields with dugouts and fencing. . . . .
In 2005 we added a 7/8 year old baseball division and a 13 year old division (155 players). . . Our goal turned into a vision of creating something special for the kids. We ended up creating three replica major league parks (Fenway, Wrigley, and Jacob's Fields)!
In 2006 we grew again adding an 11/12 year old baseball division, a 14 year old baseball division PLUS 9/10 and 11/12 year old Girls Softball Divisions (408 players)!
AND we added three more replica parks (Three Rivers, Riverfront and Crosley)!
It can even get better but only with your help!!! The Board Members, commissioners and coaches volunteer their time. Coaches also umpire 7/8 and 9/10 year old games in their divisions. Parents staff the concession stands which is the primary source of revenue for the league. Sponsors help with uniforms.
Only with everyone's help is the league a success year after year!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT! |

ATHENS SANDLOT BASEBALL
OUR 2006 YEAR IN REVIEW
Dear Players, Parents, and Community Members:
The season is coming to an end! We hope you have had a great time!
We appreciate your patience and participation throughout the year. This season was organized and run by six Sandlot Board Members and five commissioners. They took on the responsibilities of distributing flyers to all the schools, running registration day and evaluation day, making teams, creating the rules, purchasing uniforms for over 400 players and coaches T-shirts, scheduling the games, scheduling the umpires, wrote five grants, scheduled and staffed the concession stand, and purchased/catalogued/distributed equipment to name only a few things. AND they built THREE new baseball fields (Riverfront, Three Rivers, and Crosley) AT THE SAME TIME!
The Board of Directors were usually at the fields every day of the week coaching games, helping out in the concession stand, working on the fields, or umpiring. Commissioners helped make sure the games were running smoothly, on time and also helped with umpiring. Five of the Board Members were at the fields every day including every Friday after work getting fields ready for Saturday play. If it rained, the Board Members were there until midnight (or later) getting water off the fields and raking and lining the fields so we could play on the weekends. They also would purchase and stock the concession stand full of good stuff to eat for Saturday and throughout the week. They would arrive at 6:30 in the morning to continue working on the seven fields to get them ready for play by 9:00. At the end of the day they pick up the garbage and clean the concession stand.
Sandlot spent approximately $15,000 on uniforms, $7500 on umpires and $9,000 on equipment including catchers equipment, umpires equipment, bags, baseballs and softballs in the regular season. We wrote and applied for three grants and received one award from the Athens Foundation for $5000 for field construction. Two more grants are in the works. In addition to exisiting 7/8, 9/10 and 13 year old baseball divisions we added 11/12 and 14 year old baseball divisions plus 9/10 & 11/12 year old GIRLS SOFTBALL !!!
Athens Sandlot also had our first parade and we revamped the website. Plus, with a lot of help from Jay Maiden (Maiden & Jenkins) we built two new 7/8 baseball/girls softball fields complete with dugouts, home run fences and backstops (Riverfront & Three Rivers). These were made specifically in mind for the Rec Department's summer T-ball League as well.
We also built a new 9-13 year old field backstop and dugouts (Crosley Field) which will double as a softball field for tournaments. With the help of Rudy Baumgartel (Albany Nursery) we have a grass infield, irrigation and drainage on Fenway! We added approximately 750 ivy plants to Wrigley! We also framed and poured cement pads for the porta-potties and concession trailer at the city's request.
This is over $100,000 worth of Sandlot improvements made this year (Three Rivers, Riverfront, Crosley) in addition to $150,000 worth of Sandlot improvements added last year with three new fields (Fenway, Jacobs, and Wrigley).
Other volunteers helped as well including Mike Baker, Matt Harris, Jason Adams, Big Joe, Keith Bolin, Steve Bolin, Frank & Kelly Gorzack, Rick Crossen, Trevor Thompson, Chris Matters, Hurston Richmond (We Kare Lawn Care), T.C. Howard, Tom Vander Ven, Timbi Hoon, Gina Rider, Steve Mack, Tiffany Schwarzel, Esta Bickley, Max Schwarzel, and Dave West. I'm sure there are others we missed and we want to thank you as well.
Athens Sandlot awarded scholarships to 36 players to needy children to pay for their registration fees totalling $1260.
We had thirty (30) team sponsors including Rollerbowl, Sonic, Mathews Insurance, Mr. Adams, Maiden & Jenkins, Lawn Masters//Landot Used LLC, Wingett Builder LTD, Servpro, Dreamcatcher Anesthesia, Hocking Valley Bank, Don Wood Automotive (TWO TEAMS!), Ohio University Credit Union, KFC, Chase Bank, Housinghotlink.com, Albany Nursery Co./McGrath Paint & Body, O’Nail-Hartman Insurance, Abbey Carpet, Athens News, Kitchen Creations, Rider Insurance, Athens Paint & Decorating, Elks 973, Wendy’s, Athens Chiropractic and Physical Therapy Associates, Hoon/Bowen Travaux, All Power Equipment, Cooley Enterprises, KFC, and Matthew Sweeny Appraisals provided uniforms!
Diagnostic Hybrids became our 2006 LEAGUE SPONSOR!
Parents successfully staffed the concession stand (and trailer) and 102 people volunteered to be coaches for 34 teams. Five coaches did double duty as commissioners. All six Board of Directors were coaches as well.
With the city’s help we have three new drinking fountains, porta-potties, two new bleachers, and water running to Wrigley, Jacobs, and Fenway! We also have new electronic scoreboards thanks to the City who got the scoreboards obtained from Coca-Cola. The City also ran the electric service to the scoreboards.
We’ve had an incredible year! We hope you enjoyed it! In order to make things work even better and more smoothly next year we need your help. It is only with the help of volunteers that Sandlot can continue to run. Hopefully you and your kids had enough fun this year for you to come back and help again. Next year we will still need commissioners, coaches, field maintenance people, and concession stand managers, coaches and concession workers, plus evaluation and registration day volunteers to help things run even more smoothly. If you are willing to help, speak up and don’t be shy! Every bit helps and is appreciated! Athens Sandlot is not run by the City and can only work with your help!
Enjoy the league tournament! When the season is over and you still want to play baseball, sign up for Athens City Rec Baseball. Their season starts just as ours ends!
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!
