Athens Sandlot Baseball is a private, not for profit 501(c)(3) organization. It operates on the goodwill of the people involved who devote their time, experience and expertise to run the league.
In 2007 Sandlot incurred extra expenses to meet the league's growth. This included approximately $5000 in new equipment and uniform purchases and an additional $3000 in baseballs/softballs. Additionally, the parade cost $750 to hire officers to block off the streets for the parade route.
Most of our revenue goes towards paying umpires for games even with coaches umpiring thieir own games for younger divisions. Team sponsors defray the costs of uniforms. The grant funding we received goes towards field improvements. The concession stand is our primary source of revenue of approximately $2000-$3000 a year.
Due to these expenses, the league needs your help and seeks your donations to meet these expenses. And we are seeking a sponsor or sponsors for next year's parade. If interested call Mike at 594-7788.

The Plains VFW hoists the first flag to fly over the fields and the Ohio University ROTC Color Guard presents colors.

The parade started at 10:00 a.m as planned. We hope you enjoyed it - we know the kids did! Thanks to the Alexander High School Marching Band for marching, and The Plains Fire Department and the Richland Area Fire Department for sending fire trucks to the parade. You folks help make the parade special for the kids!
Opening ceremonies started with a visit from Ohio University baseball head coach and assistant coach who applauded the league for their tremendous efforts and announced that OU Baseball was having Sandlot Day in recognition of opening day and invited players and families to their game that night with players being guests of the team.
The Plains VFW presided over the raising of the flag and was recognized for the three flag poles they donated which now fly three new American flags over three of the fields. The Ohio University ROTC presented colors for the singing of the national anthem sung by JoAnn Wolfe who did a great job!
In recognition of all the dugouts and block backstops they built, Keith Bolin and Steve Bolin helped dedicate the first pitch on the Polo Grounds. Keith Bolin pitched the first pitch to Wade Lent of the Cubs. Then pitcher Ryan Mack (Phillies) pitched to Wade Lent (Cubs) as well. The first balls were given to Rotary in recognition of the field and to Mr. Bolin.
All the teams were introduced and the kids and coaches did a great job of lining up and getting onto the field.
Opening day ceremonies included dedication of Athens Sandlot's final field, the Polo Grounds sponsored by the Athens Rotary Club. It will will be offically known as the Athens Rotary Club - Bill Harmon Field Polo Grounds. Jerry Mollica, Karen Harvey and Don Cooley were present on behalf of Rotary. While Athens Sandlot Board members held the ceremonial ribbon, Jerry Mollica made the cut that officially opened the field.
It was fitting that Jerry Mollica was present when dedicating this field. Mr. Mollica was one of the Athens Jaycees who helped create the two softball fields 1 & 2 back in the late 1960s which are still in use today 40 years later. We hope the Polo Grounds are around just as long.
The Athens Rotary Club is Athens Sandlot's largest single sponsor of a field pledging $20,000 over four years which will cover approximately 1/3-1/2 the final cost of the field. The presented their second $5000 check at Opening Day as well. Jerry Mollica then spoke about how impressed Rotary was with the fields and applauded Sandlot for their effort on behalf of the kids.
After the conclusion of ceremonies, the games began. . . and the season is offically underway!

WHY THE POLO GROUNDS?
Each fields was chosen because it represented a special part of baseball, either memories or historic moments. Below is why the Polo Grounds was chosen. . .
THE POLO GROUNDS opened in 1880 to major league baseball. It was the home of the New York Giants. It was used by Major League Baseball's New York Giants from 1883 until 1957 (when they left for San Francisco), New York Metropolitans from 1883 until 1885, the New York Yankees from 1912 until 1922, and by the New York Mets in their first two seasons of 1962 and 1963. It also hosted the 1934 and 1942 Major League Baseball All-Star Games.
The original Polo Grounds was built in the 1870s for the sport of polo, and is how it acquired its name.
The park was noted for its distinctive bathtub shape, with very short distances to the left and right field walls, but an unusually deep center field AT 483 FEET.
The Polo Grounds (Version I) was the first ballpark to ever attract a crowd of more than 20,000, the first ballpark ever to host a doubleheader where each team was from a different league and the home of the first American Association versus National League "World Series" in 1884.
No player ever hit a fly ball that reached the 483-foot (147-meter) distant center-field wall, which fronted a part of the clubhouse which overhung the field. It was actually 505 feet to make it to the club house roof.

September 29: Willie Mays makes the most memorable catch in World Series history. With his back to home plate, he makes an over the shoulder catch in center on a drive by the Indians Vic Wertz. The catch prevented two runners from scoring, instead none scored.

Our Athens Sandlot Polo Grounds is also as unique as the original. It is only a mere 120 feet down to foul territory. Left and right field home runs are 220 feet away. And we have the basket area at dead center field is an amazing 240 feet away. Also, like the original, after the bases the foul line fences are in fair play. There is no warning track.
In addition, the backstop is three times the size of our other backstops at a length of 330 feet and contains the highest foul line fencing of all the fields which again is in fair play.
